Root Canal Procedure

The process of a root canal is as follows:

  • The dentist administers a local anesthetic, sometimes called freezing.
  • A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to prevent saliva and its bacteria from entering the tooth during treatment.
  • The dentist makes an opening in the tooth in order to reach the root canal system and the damaged pulp.
  • By using very delicate dental instruments, the pulp is removed and the root canal system is cleaned and enlarged.
  • The canal is sealed.
  • The opening is covered with a temporary or permanent filling.
